<p>My theory is (spoilers for Rusty Lake: Paradise!!) that after Jakob’s (Mr. Owl) family sacrificed him in the wicker owl, and he became Mr. Owl, he decided that one day he would get revenge on all of them. I don’t think they stayed around to see if he lived, as their task was done and they ascended, and all went on with their immortality, not thinking about it. I’m not too sure their reasons for coming to the Hotel, but Mr. Owl definitely seems to have the intention of killing all of them. I know there’s the whole Mr. Rabbit thing where he’s (only visually in my opinion) a different version, but I’m sure they’re all his ascended family members, gone on to live their lives, and forget about each other, or at least cease to care. And the murders are simply Mr. Owl getting his due, for them killing his mother and trying to kill him for immortality. They tried to feed him to the lake, and since the lake is always hungry, why not do the same to them and get some revenge while fulfilling his duty to the lake? </p>
