Gerard Eilander is a member of the Eilander family. He is the brother of Nicholas and the uncle to Jakob, Elizabeth, and David. He is a large man, with an unhealthy obsession with food, and rarely speaks beyond grunts.
Rusty Lake Paradise[]
Gerard acts as the doorkeeper for the island when Jakob returns in 1796, barring him access until he is handed one shrimp. He has similar demands when the Second Plague appears; one bowl of frog stew in exchange for a key, which he has also swallowed.
His hair gets infested with lice brought on by the Third Plague, and he has it trimmed short by his niece Elizabeth. Due to her blindness, she severs his ear and it is subsequently fed to a carnivorous plant, preventing reattachment. After David's transformation into a fly, he hides in a hole covered by planks of wood.
The Fifth Plague, Diseased Livestock, does not affect his appetite, and he demands his mother Margaret prepare him a Rusty Lake Burger. The diseased meat causes him intense gastrointestinal problems, and stops his heart. He is brought back to life with a heart transplant, replacing it with the mechanics of a clock. His appetite is still not diminished, as he later demands two ice cream cones during the Seventh Plague.
He joins his brother and nephew in singing songs in the lake during the Eighth Plague, and takes part in the bonfire ritual, doing impressions of an archer and an elephant. He is shown to be quite adept at archery later, shooting the hat and an apple from the head of David, and then watches the burning of the wicker owl, wearing the mask of a boar.
