The White Door is the fourteenth game by Rusty Lake and the first spin-off game of the series, released on January 9th, 2020. It was co-published by indie game publisher Second Maze, which was co-founded by the owners of Rusty Lake.

The game takes place in a mental health facility in 1972, where Robert Hill has awoken suffering from severe memory loss. The gameplay differs from other Rusty Lake games, using a third-person split screen view and lacking any inventory system.

The game has an accompanying website that is a companion to the game. It was created as part of an ARG where people from around the world followed the clues from the website to find ten hidden black cubes. These cubes had ten access codes needed for to enter the basement in Sarah's level.

    • 15:00 - Memory training
    • 18:00 - Dinner
    • 20:00 - Recreation
    • 22:00 - Sleep
  • Focus on the small table in the middle of the room.
  • Drag the drinks down, then click on the donut to eat it.
  • Click on the bathroom sink.
  • Pick up the toothbrush and drag it to brush your teeth.
  • Pick up the towel and drag it to wash your face.
  • Focus on the checkup buzzer next to the door and press the button.
  • Talk to Sarah.
    Hello Mr Hill

    I took a sip.

    They served me my donut.
    I ate it.
  • Click and hold the watch to advance time.
    Another 5 minutes passed.
  • Click on Laura.
    Finally...
    she arrived.
    She looked tired...
    but beautiful as ever.

  • Notice the upside-down password at the bottom left, 3461.

    • Round in the upper bin, square in the middle bin, and flat in the bottom bin.
  • Sort the objects until you find and sort the hand.

  • Drag and release the nozzles to drop the corresponding shaped seeds into the buckets. Sort three correctly.
  • Click and hold Bob to walk right to the third station.
  • Press the emergency button.
  • Click and hold Bob to walk left back to the boss.

  • Drag the blanket down.
  • Click on the box on the computer table. Drag the tape up, then drag the box flaps open. Leave it for now.
  • Focus on the breakfast table.
  • Drag the drinks down, and click on the mouse behind the donut.
  • Follow the mouse to the sink, computer, cabinet (behind the sink), then back to the breakfast table. Click on the dead mouse.
    Gross.
  • Click on the bathroom sink.
  • Pick up the toothbrush and drag it to brush your teeth.
  • Pick up the razor and drag it to shave your stubble.
  • Focus on the checkup buzzer and press the button.

    • The bird food's main ingredient? - Click on the box, and focus on the bird food. Drag the package up and down to see what ingredient is the most prevalent.

    • What is the emergency code? - Click on the box, and focus on the pager. Drag the top off and put in the battery, then flip the switches to light up the connection. Drag the top back on, and press all four buttons.

  • Click on the door, note the word "YOUR" and a symbol of a square with two squares inside.
  • Click on the wall safe. Input the code "YOUR" to open it.
  • Tap the wine glass until it falls over.
  • Focus on the wine spill next to the bed.
  • Pop the bubbles following the line down, starting from the lightest, upper-right bubble.
  • Note the word "DARK", and the symbol of a circle next to a horizontal line.
  • Click on the wall safe. Input the code "DARK" to open it.
  • Click on the woofers to align the musical notes with the diagram, in the corner of the room. You can click the woofer to stop and start the note's movement. The notes will slow down when you are over where they need to stop.
    • The middle woofer is the first note in order.
    • The lowest woofer is the second note in order.
    • The upper woofer is the third note in order.
  • Click on the musical notes.
  • Drag the notes until they reveal a letter.
    • The first note up to the upper-most line.
    • The second note up to the space before the next line.
    • The third note down to the space before the next line.
  • Note the word "FACE", and the symbol of a vertical line next to a circle.
  • Click on the wall safe. Input the code "FACE" to open it.
  • Click on the disco ball, and drag it clock-wise until the pink square is aligned with the picture frame on the wall.
  • Focus on the picture frame.
  • Arrange the fragments to complete the photo of the Woman. Note the word "SOUL", and the symbol of a circle with a plus inside.
  • Click on the wall safe. Input the code "SOUL" to open it.
  • Focus on the pill.
  • Drag both ends of the pill away, and click on the small figure until it gets up and walks away.
  • Focus on the Corrupted Soul.
  • Click on the words in order to complete the phrase.
    • The vertical line next to a circle - FACE
    • The square with two squares inside - YOUR
    • The circle next to a horizontal line - DARK
    • The circle with a plus inside - SOUL
  • Click on the Corrupted Soul's hand. Drag Bob's hand over to align with the other hand, then drag the fingers to align. Bob collapses, and you are now the Corrupted Soul.
  • Click on the bed, and drag the blanket up to fall asleep.


Dream 5 - The Lost Soul[]

  • Click until the bullet transforms into a car driving down the city.
    The bullet went...
    straight through my head.
    But then I saw...
    all my memories...
    drifting by.
  • Click on the bouncer.
    The bouncer looked at me.
  • Drag the bouncer's eyes up.
    His eyes widened.
    Who are you?
  • Click on Bob.
    I don't remember...
  • Click on the bouncer.
    Very good, come in.
  • Drag both doors open.
    The doors opened.
  • Click and hold to make Bob walk until you reach the DJ.
    It was hard to find...
    familiar faces.
  • Click on the DJ.
    I looked at the dj.
  • Drag the vinyl record onto the turntable, then drag the need onto the record. Click and hold to make it spin and play the song.
    He took the record.
    He put the needle on.
    And it spinned.
  • Drag deer-headed Dale over to the right. Click to make him talk.
    A guy walked up to me.
    Hey man
    Enjoying the night?
    What do you have on your face?
    I can almost look through you.
  • Drag Bob's hand up to the hole in his head.
    What did he mean?
    I touched my face.
  • Drag Bob's hand up to put his finger in the hole, then drag his hand back down. Do this again two more times.
    I moved my finger to the hole.
    What did I do?
    I felt again.
    And again.
  • Click to advance the text.
    But then I realized...
    I lost it all.
    I was losing my mind.
  • Click and hold Bob to make him walk.
    My soul was changing.
  • Click on Laura.
    But suddenly...
    a glimpse of recognition.
    There she was.
  • Drag Laura's eyes open, then drag her clockwise until she is upside down.
    She opened her eyes.
    Her head turned...
    upside down.
  • Click on all of the black flowers to make moths pop out and fly away.
    Everything was changing.
  • Drag the black moths over to Laura's eyes. Click to talk to her.
    The moths...
    flew into her eyes.
    I wish...
    We could go back...
    to where it all started.
  • Click and hold Laura until she disappears offscreen.
    And she went...
    up in the air.
    Leaving me, again.


Day 6[]

  • Drag the blanket down.
  • Focus on the breakfast table.
  • Drag the drinks down. Click on the flies until they all fly away, then click the donut to eat it.
  • Click on the bathroom sink.
  • Drag the left hand down, then the head, the left hand, the right hand, and the left hand.
  • Focus on the checkup buzzer and press the button.
  • Talk to Sarah.
    Please keep your distance, sir.
    You are not looking well today.
  • Click on the symbols to complete the sequences to answer Sarah's questions.
    • Could you complete the sequence? - Upside-down cross, upside-down T
    • Complete please - Circle below a horizontal line, circle next to a vertical line
    • Continue - Square with the diagonal line in the lower-left corner, square with the diagonal line in the upper-left corner
    • Next one - Squiggly line with the circle at the upper-right, squiggly line with the circle at the lower-left
    • One more - Circle with four quadrants, circle with eight quadrants
    • Another one - Square with two squares inside, square with a horizontal line at the bottom and a square at the lower-left
  • Click on one of the two options (meat, egg) for your dinner.

  • Press down and enter to start the memory test. See what object is blinking, and walk to it.
    • The breakfast table - Click on the black substance at the bottom of the mug until it becomes a small Corrupted Soul, breaking the mug and running away.
    • The box - Drag the box flaps open. Use the left flap to fan the Corrupted Soul over to the small circle at the right. Click the Soul to make it disappear.
    • The plant - Click on the pot so the Corrupted Soul's head is peeking out. Click the leave bunches in order of the number of leaves (1-5). Click on the Soul to make it run away.
    • Picture frame - Click and hold the Corrupted Soul (at the bottom-left) until it turns the Woman's eyes black.
    • Speaker - Click the bottom woofer, then the middle woofer until the musical note is over the Corrupted Soul, then the bottom woofer to drop the note down.
    • Dresser - Open the bottom drawer and click on the small box. Open the box, then drag the Corrupted Soul up and drop it until it is squashed by the coin.
  • Press enter to end the test.
  • Focus on the dinner tray. Click to eat the food, and click on the pill.
  • Click on the recreation box.
    • Click on the recreation box, then keep clicking on the Corrupted Soul under the breakfast table until it comes out and walks over to the recreation box.
    • Click on the pieces of furniture inside the box that have a symbol overtop of them: Bed, computer table, speaker, dresser, computer table, dresser.
    • Click on the Corrupted Soul until it goes into bed.
  • Click on the bed, and drag the blanket up to fall asleep.


Dream 6 - The White Door[]

  • Click on Bob.
    I woke up in the street.
  • Drag the clouds to the right.
    I was looking at the sky.
    Clouds were drifting by.
  • Drag the shadow down.
    A shadow came over me.
  • Click on the old woman.
    An old woman...
    was standing next to me.
  • Drag the cane to hit Bob's head a few times.
    She poked me with her stick.
  • Click on her hand.
    You should call someone.
    And she dropped a coin.
  • Drag Bob's hand over the coin.
    I grabbed it.

    I got up.
    There was only one place...
    I could call.
  • Click on the telephone booth to open the doors.

Day 7[]

  • Click on the door handle and drag it to the left to open the door.
  • Focus on the window, and drag the blind up. You must restore colour to the room, and there are six things you have to do. You can check your progress by the segments coloured in at the window.
  • Focus on the breakfast table.
  • Drag the drinks down, and click on the donut to eat it.
  • Click on the bathroom sink.
  • Pick up the towel and drag it to wipe the mirror.
  • Focus on the checkup buzzer and press the button.
  • Click on the computer, and press the enter key.
  • Press down and enter to start the memory test. Use the arrow keys to fill in all the spaces with colour. You can only touch each space once, so it has to be a continuous line.
  • Focus on the dinner tray. Sort the foods by colour.
    • Red - Tomato, cherries, meat, strawberry
    • Green - Broccoli, cucumber, pear
  • Once the food is coloured, click to eat them all.
  • Click on the recreation box and focus on the drawing.
  • Use the pencil crayons to colour in the bird, as seen in the window.
    • Head and chest- Red
    • Belly - Grey
    • Wings and tail - Brown
  • Focus on the window. Click on Laura's silhouette, and then on Bob's silhouette.
  • Click on the Corrupted Soul. Talk to it.
    TAKE MY PLACE
  • Click on the Corrupted Soul's hand. Drag Bob's hand over to align with the other hand, then drag the fingers to align. The Soul collapses, and you are now Bob.
  • Click on the bed, and drag the blanket up to fall asleep.


Dream 7 - The Bird[]

  • Click and hold to make Bob walk.
    I was walking in the park.
    A woman sat on a bench.
  • Click and hold Bob, then click on Laura.
    For a moment,
    I stopped...
    to look at her.
  • Click on the bird to make it chirp then fly away.
    A bird flew by.
  • Drag Laura's hand down.
    She was drawing something.
    She put her pencil down.
  • Click on Bob.
    I asked her:
    What are you drawing?
  • Drag Laura's eyes down.
    She looked down.
  • Drag Laura's hand down, then drag the book cover to the right.
    It's a Robin.
    She said.
    She moved her hand.
    And closed the book.
  • Click on Bob.
    I am sorry.
    It's gone now.
  • Click on Laura.
    She stared at me.
    No it is not.
    It's all in your head.
  • Drag Laura's eyes down.
    She closed her eyes.


Secret Level - Sarah[]

  • Click on the door handle, then drag open the door.
  • Focus on the breakfast table.
  • Focus on the ID card for your name, S. White, and your access code, "FREE".
  • Click on the computer, and press the enter key.

  • Select "access code", and note the combination.

    • Line attached down to O
    • Square with two squares inside
    • Upside-down cross
  • Go to the cabinet behind the sink and focus on the code box.
  • Scroll until the symbols match as above.
  • Drag the screen door over to the left. Wires will spread out all over the room.
  • Focus on the lower-right quadrant. You must find the symbols around the room to complete the combination.
  • Defocus, and focus on the television. Flip through the channels and note what appears on screen according to each number.
    • Coffee and donut - 1
    • Johnnson Bird Food - 2
    • The plant - 3
    • Laura's photo - 4
    • The speaker - 5
    • The coin - 6
    • The bird - 7
  • Go around the room to each object that appeared on the television for the symbol that corresponds to each number.
    • The breakfast table. Drag the orange juice down.
    • Drag open the box flaps.
    • The plant.
    • The picture frame.
    • The speaker.
    • The dresser, open the bottom drawer. Open the small box.
    • The window, drag open the blinds. Click on the bird.
  • Focus on the cabinet and back to the lower-right quadrant. Input all of the symbols. The red lights should all be on.
    • 1 - Upside-down cross
    • 2 - Square with two squares inside
    • 3 - T
    • 4 - Circle with a plus inside
    • 5 - Line attached down to O
    • 6 - Circle next to a horizontal line
    • 7 - Squiggly line with a circle at the lower-left
  • Defocus, and focus on the television.
  • Flip to the first channel, and press the play button.
    • Click and drag to erase the image of Laura.
  • Flip to the second channel, and press the play button.
    • Click on the hand, and draw over Laura until the photo falls.
  • Flip to the third channel, and press the play button.
    • Click the segments in order to play all of the images in order. If you see Johnnson's Bird Food, you need to start again.
      • Blue and grey segment - Ping pong
      • Yellow, red and yellow segment - Report on Laura's death
      • Brown segment - Disco
      • Pink and yellow segment - Laura's dead body
      • Yellow and blue segment - Turn the TV off
  • Flip to the fourth channel, and press the play button.
    • Click on the photo to split it into pieces, then drag the pieces to their corresponding spots.
  • Flip to the fifth channel, and press the play button.
    • Move the three beams of light to cover all the lines of black moths.
  • Flip to the sixth channel, and press the play button.
    • Move Bob's items to the right, and Laura's items to the left.
    • Bob's items are the donut, box, plant, photo, speaker, coin, and the bird.
  • Flip to the seventh channel, and press the play button.
    • Move the pieces over Laura until she is completely whited out.
  • Flip the channel again to turn the television off.
  • Defocus, and focus on the lower-right quadrant. Click on the yellow and red cube to make the Corrupted Soul shake.
  • Click on the bed. Drag the blanket up.


She's Not There
  • Click and hold to make Bob walk.
    I was walking in the park.
    I saw an empty bench.
  • Click and hold Bob.
    For a moment...
    I stopped...
  • Click on the bird to make it chirp then fly away.
    A bird flew away.
  • Click and hold to make Bob walk.
    I kept on walking.
  • Focus on the white door.
  • Click on the door handle and drag it to the left to open the door.

Secret Level - Basement[]

To gain access to the basement, start or restart the Sarah level.

  • Go directly to the computer.
  • Select the login "T. Hoorn" and enter: TWDH
  • Select "basement". You'll see an odd image.
  • Click the down arrow until the breakfast table is replaced by a ladder.
  • Go down the ladder.


The Escape

To retrieve the codes:

  • Go to the website and login as Dr. Hoorn:
    • T_Hoorn
    • TWDH!
  • Click on "Cube locator".
  • Click each red dot on the map to get a picture of the person and their basement code.

Back to the game:

  • Walk to the right to the code box.
  • Next to each door, take note of the letter associated with the person within.
  • Return to the code box.
  • Enter the following codes:

  • Walk all the way to the right to the elevator.

Soundtrack Soundtrack[]

The soundtrack for this game contains 12 specially composed tracks from composer Victor Butzelaar. It can be purchased via bandcamp.com.

The piece of operatic music in the Day 4 dream is from Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème. It is the aria "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" in which Mimi tells Rodolfo about herself. Interestingly, the aria includes the line (when translated to English) "I stay all alone/In my tiny white room"[1]; though this may be coincidental.

Trivia Trivia[]

  • Following the release of the Steam version, The White Door has 16 unlockable achievements.
  • Getting the "DREAM 3" achievement allows you to see an advertisement for The White Door mental health facility, with the phone number 31202443854. If you call the number, Mr. Owl will answer and tell you that the White Door is closed right now, but to visit after January 22nd (2021).
  • In early versions, the password for login "T. Hoorn" is "DOGS". But because some people found out before January 22nd (ARG) they changed it to "TWDH".
  • You can enter the password "CATS" for the login "P. Clark", but nothing noteworthy happens.
